Scariano Loyola University New Orleans New Orleans, LA 70118 [email protected] Abstract: A host of materials in an introductory level statistics course relies on the “normality assumption.” However, assessing normality is a very subtle and difficult task, even for expert data analysts. To aid our student’s understanding we have written a program that implements a visual version of the Lilliefors test for normality and the powerful Anderson-Darling test for normality. In this paper we introduce these tests and show their usefulness through examples. The software, which is freely available to colleagues and students at http://www.loyno.edu/~calzada, should be used as a complement to other statistical techniques, like histograms and probability plots. Introduction: The following problem comes from David S. Moore’s The Basic Practice of Statistics [1], page 382:

A New Bootstrap Based Algorithm for Hotelling’s T2 Multivariate Control Chart

Normality is a common assumption for many quality control charts. One should expect misleading results once this assumption is violated. In order to avoid this pitfall, we need to evaluate this assumption prior to the use of control charts which require normality assumption. However, in certain cases either this assumption is overlooked or it is hard to check. Robust control charts and bootstra...

Improving the Rao-Nam secret key cryptosystem using regular EDF-QC-LDPC codes

This paper proposes an efficient joint secret key encryption-channel coding cryptosystem, based on regular Extended Difference Family Quasi-Cyclic Low-Density Parity-Check codes. The key length of the proposed cryptosystem decreases up to 85 percent using a new efficient compression algorithm. Cryptanalytic methods show that the improved cryptosystem has a significant security advantage over Ra...

Using SAS® Software to Check Assumptions for Analysis

Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) is a powerful statistical tool for adjusting an analysis to acoount for the effects of concomitant variables. The technique may be applied to completely randomized designs (CRO) as well as repeated measures designs. In addition to normality assumptions, ANCOVA depends on assumptions about variances and slopes. Although not usually provided directly, most statisti...

Quantitative Data – Parametric & Non-parametric Tests

Assumption for 1 sample T test: Data are normally distributed. We have discussed in the last article on how to check the normality assumption of a quantitative data. One issue being highlighted was that these formal normality tests are very sensitive to the sample size of the variable concerned. As seen here, table II shows that the normality assumptions for both the systolic and diastolic bloo...

A Brief Review of Tests for Normality

In statistics it is conventional to assume that the observations are normal. The entire statistical framework is grounded on this assumption and if this assumption is violated the inference breaks down. For this reason it is essential to check or test this assumption before any statistical analysis of data. In this paper we provide a brief review of commonly used tests for normality. We present...
